First Film is an ongoing collective film that began in 2022, with the creation of an artists-run film lab in Porto’s old town, inside a medieval tower dating from the 13th century.
Torre means “tower” in Portuguese, and gave it's name to the lab. The space is remarkably difficult to access, making the transportation of anything in or out an adventure. The arrival of a heavy copy printer and a Steenbeck, kindly donated by Cherry Kino, marked the first move and the beginning of the lab. And, therefore, of the First Film.
When structural works in the medieval tower required the lab to move again, the project continued in a temporary space nearby. First Film grows alongside these successive moves, documenting not only places, but the collective process of building, dismantling and rebuilding a space for analogue film. It will soon continue, with the return to the original tower space. First Film is, as the lab, forever in the making.
