CHALLENGING THE CINEMA ROOM

21.12.2023 | 19h15  | BATALHA FILM CENTER

Part of SPECTRAL, a European project between six independent analogue cinema laboratories, Challenging the Cinema Room is a programme dedicated to collective research into the qualities, possibilities and limitations of the conventional cinema device. In 2023 it features the performance “Intra Protocol”, by Sally Golding with Matt Spendlove and the presentation of the results of Primal Light #3 residencies, currently under development at Laboratório da Torre.

INTRA PROTOCOL
by SALLY GOLDING + MATT SPENDLOVE (SPATIAL)

Intra Protocol occupies and enlivens the audiovisual systems of communal spaces and audience bodies, delivering deconstructed compositions in the form of a ‘happening’. Triggering corporeal sensations and making tangible pure actions of light and sound, the performance is in conversation with the broader context of expanded cinema and sound system culture. In this live performance, the artists explore the technical apparatus of cinema and club spaces– manipulating the elements of projected light, speaker arrays and lighting rigs as a form of experimental audiovisual composition. The performance is a practice of repurposing ‘social architecture’, thinking about the cinema or club as a constructed environment that shapes andconditions our behaviours and responses. This piece moves between traditional cinematic tools and the ‘microcinema’ of personal devices. The composition becomes a communication protocol, or a script, for a new expanded cinematic interface. An experiment in revisioning and representing a performance across time and place by Sally Golding and Matt Spendlove (aka spatial), the work takes on the form and occupies the space in which it is enacted. Intertwining dubbed-out broken sonics, monolithic nebulous screens, and shifting light fields – Intra Protocol plays with anticipation to use the venue – and the audience participants themselves – as acreative and collaborative device.

Sally Golding is an Australian-British artist based on Ngunnawal land in Canberra, creatingimmersive audiovisual performances, participatory installations and creative-critical writing. Herwork considers participation and liveness in immersive environments; art as a mechanism forshared experiences; and dialogues examining the role of the artist, audience and gallery within newtechnological contexts.  - https://sallygolding.com/

Matt Spendlove (aka spatial) is an artist from London who creates immersive installations, audiovisual performances and sonic artefacts. Across these situations he explores spatialambiguity, structural form, waveform materiality and the illusory contours of psychophysics.

PRIMAL LIGHT #3

Primal Light residencies are part of SPECTRAL project. Being the residencies dedicated to artistic production within E.C.A. - Expanded Cinematic Art -, artists are challenged to interpret the environment as a source of primal light, time and motion.

Primal Light #3 residents are Juliana Julieta, Leonor Guerra and Miguel Tavares, developing the works Imagem Latente, Artifício I - VI and p~r~o~j~e~c~t~o~r.

As a structure of support do artistic creation, Laia co-op produces Primal Light residencies, currently under development at Laboratório da Torre.

Imagem Latente, by Juliana Julieta
Imagem Latente is built on various exercises aimed at creating moving images using film, including mourning the "lost" image of what was filmed. The work explores direct animation on film, phytograms (cafenol, mint and boldo), performative projection, the macro universe and the pictorial sensibility of painting.

Julieta is a visual artist who works in painting and experimental cinema. Began working with 16mm in 2021 at Casa do Xisto and Doc's Kingdom. In 2022, with a FLAD grant, Julieta was an artist in resiency at Mono No Aware, screening films at the Anthology Film Archives.

Artifício I - VI, by Leonor Guerra

Ingenious means or process;
Trick, ruse, disguise.
Cunning and trickery,
dissimulation, finesse and craft.
Simulation or artifact?

Hand - machine.

Texture, detail and color, as well as the ability that images have to summon and re-frame reality, stimulate attention and desire, allowing for a distinct experience of the world. From its development as a craft, to its growth as an industry, film reminds us of its technical dimension - its quality of skilled “artifice”.

Leonor Guerra studied Media Archeology and works as a film technician. She is a member of Laboratório Torre, with an interest in film labs’ collective management and pedagogy, as sites of living preservation and knowledge.

p~r~o~j~e~c~t~o~r, by Miguel Tavares
A projector has never again emitted rays of red, green or blue, yellow, pink light...
The day before, it got jammed in a frame: hand-painted with a permanent black marker.

Miguel Tavares began by filming his friends skateboarding. He moves between the cinema room and all the spaces that host images and sounds. He is a member of Laboratório da Torre (Porto) and a teacher at Ar.Co (Lisboa).

CAULDRON
2023

7 - 10 november 2023
Laboratório da Torre and Batalha Film Center

From the 7th to 10th of  November, laboratories Mire (FR) and Cratel-lab(ES) will be in Porto to present their works and research  around analog cinema devices. The presentations under SPECTRAL project context will take place at Laboratório da Torre and  Batalha Film Center. Mire is an association based in Nantes, France. Crater-lab is an artist-run lab based in Barcelona, Spain. Both structures are dedicated to the promotion, research and production of experimental cinema.

At Laboratório da Torre, MIRE and Crater-lab will, in sessions for members of the Laboratory, present research and experiments with analog devices and produce creative workshops of filming and of ecological development. Crater-lab also presents a performance and an installation in a public session in the space of Laboratório da Torre, 08/11, at 19h15.

At Batalha Film Center, Mire presents seven recent works – one expanded cinema performance and six short films - made at the Laboratory. A programme dedicated to chromatic explorations, research on the materiality of film and connections to the environment, in an artisanal - sometimes even punk - approach. Crater-Lab will be screening three recent short films made by members of the lab. The programme focuses on color printing experiments, primitive techniques, hand developing and structural conceptions in both traditional and innovative ways of approaching analog possibilities, regarding corporal and landscape explorations.

PRIMAL LIGHT #02
KAREL DOING

AT LABORATÓRIO DA  TORRE

Karel Doing is an independent artist, filmmaker and researcher whose practice investigates the relationship between culture and nature by means of analogue and organic process, experiment and co-creation.During his residency at Laia-Torre he has taken a close look at the plants, flowers and trees that can be found in Porto. The artist has created a multi-layered hypnotic sequence that brings the unobtrusive presence of urban nature to the foreground, revealing the ornamentation that shapes the urban landscape. The frames seem to be thorn apart by a primal light that both energises and destroys the images.
